Rainwater Harvesting is the method of capturing rainwater in Water Storage Tanks for use in your irrigation system, and/or other household purposes. A booster pump is then installed at the Water Storage Tanks to supply the irrigation system and/or garden tap/s with the harvested rainwater. Using Rainwater Harvesting to run your irrigation system is the GREEN way to save our most precious natural resource. Mirrigation SA provides a highly qualified service to suit all your Rainwater Harvesting installations.
A typical Rainwater Harvesting installation consists of a Rain-Head, also referred to as a Leaf Eater, installed against the wall below a cut down-pipe from the guttering. The Rain-Head has a 45 degree sloped top, covered with a fine mesh to deflect leaves and other debris away from the Rainwater Harvesting collection point. The Rain-Head also prevents insects from entering the Rainwater Harvesting system.
Next in line of the Rainwater Harvesting installation, is the First-Flush unit. This is designed to inhibit the dusty rainwater, flowing off the roof when rainfall starts, from entering the Rainwater Harvesting tank. The First-Flush unit consists of a T-piece in the pipe towards the tank with a micro drain-filter at the bottom of the pipe fitted to the T-piece, and a plastic ball inside this down-pipe. As water flows from the Rain-Head into the First-Flush, the plastic ball rises and seals off the top, allowing only the cleaner Rainwater to the Rainwater Harvesting tank. The water in the First-Flush will slowly drain after the rainfall & the filter can then be cleaned to ready the unit for the next rainfall.
You can calculate the amount of water your Rainwater Harvesting installation can harvest by applying this simple formula; One mm of rain on One square meter of roof will yield One liter of water. This will help you determine the optimum Water Storage Tank/s size for your Rainwater Harvesting system.
Rainwater Harvesting systems will operate best when the irrigation system is controlled by a Weathermatic Smart-Line controller fitted with a Weather Station. This will ensure that the water supply to the irrigation system is used most economically, replacing only the water required to maintain a healthy garden.
Whenever the Rainwater Harvesting system is used to supply your irrigation system with water, a municipal top-up is installed to maintain the minimum amount of water in the Water Storage Tank/s to allow continuous operation of the irrigation system. This also includes switch-over valves to allow you to switch back to the direct municipal supply to your irrigation system during the dry months.
